B197

With license code B197, you can obtain your Class B driver’s license by training on an automatic transmission vehicle and will still be authorized to drive manual transmission vehicles afterward. This requires training on an automatic transmission as well as additional training in manual transmission skills, without a separate test.

B78

The B78 license category, on the other hand, allows you to drive only automatic vehicles. It’s ideal if you want to avoid manual transmission entirely—switching to a manual transmission vehicle later on would then require additional training.
